Education - Kilroy Academy

Kilroy Academy teaches today’s youth the knowledge and skills they need to help save Planet Ocean.

ORCA scientists have worked hard to develop Kilroy ACADEMY. With generous funding from Indian River Impact 100, ORCA has created Kilroy Academy, a new program offering dynamic and impactful science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) education resources. All resources are available online at http://www.kilroyacademy.org.

The program itself is a network of educators and learners focused on marine conservation, with a special interest in Indian River Lagoon conservation.

The program website provides critical building blocks of knowledge teaching the skills needed to become defenders of our water planet. These building blocks take the form of short videos that are tutorials, hands-on demonstrations, research projects and virtual field trips along with useful links and worksheets designed to emphasize key points.

All resources are designed at a high school level to make learning relevant and applicable to real-world issues. Easily accessible, free of charge web-based resources teach students to think critically and analyze real-time data from ORCA's Kilroy Network, a water quality monitoring device and database (view online).

This program is transformational because it offers educators in Indian River County a new and innovative way to engage their students in STEAM education to help the local ecosystem. The primary goal of Kilroy Academy is to teach students enough so that can understand the complexity of the challenges our planet is facing and help ORCA in our efforts to find solutions to the problems faced by aquatic ecosystems.

"ORCA’s Kilroy is
brilliant. The whole concept of a low-cost monitoring network is critical for understanding the ocean so we can better protect it.
